I just recently bought a Normandy 4 clarinet but doing some research I've noticed something odd about mine. In all the pictures of Normandy 4s I've seen, there is a "4" with the shield on the upper joint. However, the only place that my clarinet has the "4" with the shield is on the lower joint.
My upper joint just has the shield with Normandy in it. What does this mean? (It is also solidly wood and the trill keys are flat throughout. I'm not sure if that helps.)

I don't have my Normandy with me at school, but if memory serves I have that "shield" on top join, bottom joint, and bell. (Shield being that upside down bell-like flare) Also, I was under the assumption Normandy 4's had a wide range of production with different looking versions.
My trill keys are completely flat as well on the top joint as well.
Are your serial numbers matching on both joints?

The trumpet flare was on newer models, from what I understand, and the actual shield was on earlier models. I just wondered if anyone could tell me what type or year range mine would fall under with it being a version of the shield I haven't seen before. It could be just that...a version I haven't seen yet lol

Clarinet Perfection is the place to find Leblanc serial numbers and compare Normandy trademarks. Go to http://www.clarinetperfection.com/clsnLeblancNormandy.htm and search for EmblemNormandy.
The presence of the "4" on the lower joint and its absence on the upper joint means that the horn is a "marriage" between an older upper joint and a newer lower joint. Since the designs were nearly identical, the horn will probably play OK. If yours has noticeable intonation problems, you should return it.

That was helpful, thank you. But what deterred me originally from thinking that the top joint was an original was that it doesn't have a shared G# and A post. It also doesn't have "jump" trill keys nor does it have "Made in France" anywhere on it. It is ridiculously confusing!

I believe Ken Shaw is correct in that you have a "married" model.
My Normandy 4 has the shield with "Normandy" printed in the center along with a "4" above the word Normandy. The shield, name and number are on my upper and lower joints. On my bell is simply the shield with Normandy printed in the middle.
