 More synthetic reeds.....
Author: William

As you all know, I have been playing Forestone reeds for well over three years and have been quite satisfied with their superior performance over cane. I used them on all of my reed instruments, clarinet and sax. However, a new reed has come to my attention made by Harry Hartmann of Germany. It is called the Fiberreed and my preliminary trials have been quite promising. The tip matches my Kaspar #14 mpc perfectly and the sound is as full as the best adjusted cane reed. The tone quality does not become dull in the upper register and the overall response is crisp. Tonal focus remains centered from FF down to PP. The reeds I have received so far have been too hard to use full time and they do not seem to be adjustable as are the Forestones, however I am waiting to try some softer examples and will report when they are received. Harry Hartmann Fiberreed--has anyone else tried these reeds as yet??

I have tried the Harry Hartmann Fiberreds on Tenor and Bari Sax. I ordered a 3 or medium and wish I'd gotten a higher strength reed. I typically use a Fibracell 3 and the Hartmann reeds seem to run slightly softer than the Fibracells. I have not tried Forestone reeds as they don't make them for Bass Clarinet or Contra Alto. The Hartmann reeds seem to be a little rougher on the edges than the Fibracells...and no, I did not try to sand them down for comfort at all.

Fiberreeds have been around for quite a while. I've tried them a few times. Meh.

David, could you elaborate? Which model reed did you try and for what instrument--and, how did they play for you? The reeds Harry sent to me were all "carbon fiber" models and at H & MH strengths seemed a bit too hard--but the basic sound was very promising. I so wish someone besides Legere would start offering synthetic bass clarinet reeds..........

Carbon fiber models, tried them on bass clarinet and tenor sax. Not recently though; it was a couple of years ago. I preferred Legeres. And above all, I still prefer cane. I only use synthetics for practicing at home (though I rarely have time to practice anything nowadays), for outdoor concerts, and for pit orchestra if I have multiple single-reed doubles to play.

I've long since made my peace with cane; I know what brands and strengths to get, and I know how to break them in and adjust them to suit me.

What about Bari synthetic Bb clarinet reeds. How do they compare to Legere for you.

Forestone Tenor Sax reeds work on Bass Clarinet. They seem to run much softer than Legere or cane. I play a Legere 3 on Bass and a Forestone 4 is too soft for me, I have a 4.5 on order.

Because it's "that time of year" again, I hasten to point out that unless you have a sure fire way to get your reeds seasoned, you may want to enlist the help of some sort of synthetic to get you through the nastiest aspects of dried out reed syndrome (without losing your sanity that is).
