Help identifying an Evette & Schaffer
Author: Bob Phillips
Date:   2012-10-01 21:39

I've got an Evette & Schaffer, serial number K23141.

That S/N places the manufacture at 1917 (!) when looked up in the E&S listing, but (without the K), it might have been made in the 1969-73 period.

I has separate posts for the throat G# and A keys, a metal tenon cap on the center joint, and no cutout under the right hand crow's foot.

The left pinky C & B keys are out of adjustment, so the long C and B don't always sound.

Other than that, the thing seems to play very well and sounds good.

Thanks for any help you can provide in placing this horn's pedigree and age.

Well the key work back in 1917 is pretty different.

I agree, Bob Bernardo. I'll cross off the roaring 20's possibility.

Thanks, Jack Kissinger.
Pretty detailed dating.

... and, you agree that it is a run-of-the-mill E&S, not a "master model"?

Right from the Buffet website.

By the time your E&S was made, my understanding is that the "Master Model" designation was determined ex post, i.e., Buffet tested all of its E&S clarinets at the completion of production, a few that played particularly well were designated "Master Model." As a result, Master Models are scattered randomly throughout the serial number list. I don't remember whether the serial number look-up on the Buffet site notes the distinction or not. If you have a Master Model, the designation should be stamped on all four sections.

Best regards,
jnk

Thanks, Jack Kissinger. Mine has no such markings.
