Jazz Clubs in New York City
Author: MIchael Kincaid

I'm taking a trip to New York City in May and I want to listen to live jazz clarinet. I tried
searching around the internet, but I can't find any listings. Does anyone
have any recommendations for clubs or where I might look? Thanks. Michael

I haven't been there yet, but every Tuesday evening the Gully Low Jazz Band (an excellent group that I've heard before) plays the music of Louis Armstrong at Birdland on West 47th Street (I think). Last time I saw them play at Lincoln Center they had a very good clarinetist (whose name escapes me). The shows start early too (I think 5:30), so that would give you time to go to another club later that night.

At the Time Cafe (aka Fez) the Mingus Big Band plays once a week (I forget which day). I don't know if they have a regular clarinetist, but it's a great band. Location is Lafayette Street at the corner of Great Jones Street downtown.

If I think of more, or get more accurate info I'll post.

Pick up a "Village Voice" at any newstand upon arrival, all the best clubs and artists in town are listed.

Try Arthur's Tavern on Grove Street in Greenwich Village Sunday and Monday nights. Both nights feature excellent dixie style bands with fine NY musicians.

I love Don Byron's Bug Music; it would be terrific to get to see him play. I'll check it out. Thanks.
