Hey guys this is my recording of the first Excerpt for the Honor Band of America. Just wanted some tips/critiques. Also, if anyone else is doing this are you having a problem Where assignment 1 and 3 are the same? Thanks in advance!

Not bad.

It's hard to stay together with pre-recorded sound, but I think you can do better. Let it flow more smoothly and concentrate on matching the recording.

Clarinetists in bands automatically play to blend, but for me your tone needs more energy and liveliness. Use the Keith Stein exercise at http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=245&t=234. The mental image is that you're the first chair clarinetist. Play out and carry the rest of the section with you. It would help to turn up the volume a little for the recorded band.

You play with good technique, but there were a few technical glitches and intonation problems. Practice the passage dead slow (metronome at 40, one note per click), "engraving" the notes and phrases into your muscle memory. Never go faster than perfect.

Good luck. You obviously have the talent.

At 19 seconds you are very out of time, I think you need to record it again, I wouldn't send this off as an audition tape.

Everything that Ken said above I agree with. It feels like you're concentrating on note-by-note, or group-by-group, I'm not hearing any phrases. I want to hear direction in the sound. For example, the passages that move upward could have an opening up in the sound. Don't concentrate too hard on this though - feel the direction of the phrase and it should happen quite naturally. Your biggest clue is SoundCloud - look at the waveform of your recording!

This recording proves that you can play the notes (and they're not easy!). Take the next step and show the panel that you're so much more than than that!

Best of luck - you've made an excellent start, and please post more recordings as they are done!

It's good. But good doesn't always make it. You were dragging a bit and on my speaker system your sound is well above average, yet your tonguing, articulation, is holding you back.

Back to your sound. I feel you may be using too heavy of a reed and/or the facing is off, which can hold back your articulation. It's also possible the mouthpiece just doesn't fit you. I know I said your sound is above average, but lets not get confused about reeds and mouthpieces; making it easier to play.

Feel free in responding to help us understand your clarinet setup and maybe more ideas from other readers can help achieve your goals.

Auditions are very difficult. In fact I only won one position using a taped recording, but they paid my way for a live audition. So these taped auditions really need to be dead on. Sometimes it's best to leave out the band recordings unless they ask for it, or unless your recording is live with your band. In most cases the high school bands aren't the best so this can also hurt your auditions.
