I ripped open a Flow Pack V12 4, and saw that there was this reddish brown "stain" on the vamp towards the tip (but not quite on the tip). I haven't tried it yet out of paranoia, but it looks very well cut and of otherwise very good cane. Has anybody else had this "stain" appear on their reeds before? And (here's a stupid question) is it safe?
I'm paranoid, don't judge me :P

To make reed selection fun for clarinetists, Vandoren puts one reed with a reddish brown stain in every batch of 1000 reeds.
Whoever finds it is entitled to one free box of reeds on your next birthday.
Contact your local Vandoren retailer. Ask for the "Birthday Special" promotion.

I suppose next you'll tell me that Vandoren reeds are the most consistent in the world...
...unless you're being serious, in which case I feel like a jerk.

Tannin, which is responsible for the brown splotches on the external part of the reed (the back part called the epidermis) is brownish-red and, occasionally, some if the subepidermal tissue will be stained. I have not seen the tannin as far down as the "vamp," and it is usually continuous from the epidermis. There is also a red-brown staph bacteria and a red-brown mold that might also cause the discoloration. I can't tell which it is without microscopic examination. It is a pity you do not have a digital microscope. They can be purchased for $60.00.
If you have doubts, throw it out (or send it to me).
