A recording of a Marcellus Masterclass
Author: curiousclarinetist

I've uploaded a recording made in 1982 of a masterclass with Robert Marcellus from the beginning of his summer sessions at Northwestern University. It is incredible to hear the voice and teachings of such a renowned performer and pedagogue. Enjoy!

Thank you for this recording. Starting in 1948, I also was a student of the late Earl Handlon of the Minneapolis Symphony. His teachings revealed a lot!

Wow! What an honor to have worked with Earl Handlon! I would love to hear about his methods.

There's so much really important information in just the first 20 minutes or so. Everyone should listen to this snippet of clarinet wisdom.

Mr. Marcellus mentioned several times the small clarinet compendium by Bonade. Is this still available anywhere?

You can download the Bonade at

http://www.conn-selmer.com/en-us/educators/educational-resource-center/woodwinds/

http://www.conn-selmer.com/index.php/download_file/942/1948/

They also have the Bonade phrasing studies for the Rose etudes.

The Marcellus classes were wonderful. I had the opportunity to perform/participate in 1985. The following year I attended and studied with Marcellus for the summer.

Conn-Selmer, in its monumental ignorance, has dropped the Leblanc publications. However, Bonade's Clarinetist's Compendium can be found in the Internet Archive at http://web.archive.org/web/20100827102138/http://education.conn-selmer.com/pdf/AVP74_Leblanc_Clarinetists_Compendium.pdf.

Better yet, it's included in Larry Guy's wonderful compilation The Complete Daniel Bonade, available from Gary van Cott at http://www.vcisinc.com/clarinet.htm, Item C919.

I also strongly recommend The Daniel Bonade Workbook, Item C338 and the CD collecting 85 examples of his playing http://www.vcisinc.com/clarinetcds.htm, Item CD017.

While you're there, get The Artistry of Ralph McLane, Item CD211, which is perhaps even better.

I clicked on the play button and it didn't play. Did anyone have a problem playing the clip also?

wkleung -

Firefox has trouble with some videos. If you're using FF, try Internet Explorer, which always works for me. (Make sure IE is up to date. There have been some new exploits recently.)

Thank you very much for posting this wonderful recording. It is always a great joy to hear Marcellus' playing. Does anyone know the piece/etude that he is playing around 25 minutes?

Thank you,
Naohito
