Making nature sounds

Hi all,

I am in this gig orchestra that requires members to improvise sounds or any u contemporary effects of animals or nature ie. things like river, water etc...

I aint got any clue on this... anyone can share / teach me!?

I am just on the usual Bb if that helps...

Use the strongest reed you can find and you will get a rushing water effect.

Listen to as much Spike Jones as you can find. Then learn multiphonics and slap tonguing.

Listen to Giora Feidman and David Tarras. Try to find recordings by Jiri Stingl, who had a truly bizarre tone. Not to mention Acker Bilk.

Be willing to try anything. Reed on top, teeth on the reed, singing, gargling or grunting while playing, wrapping the reed in aluminum foil or putting a piece between the reed and the lay, buying #1 reeds and scraping them thinner. All on a Theo Wanne, Runyon or Vandoren 5JB mouthpiece.

It's as much a matter of imagination as technique. Listen to a creaking door or a pig's squeal and just do it. Learn first to make really ugly sounds. You can always tone them down when you need to.
