What is the difference between the Selmer M series and N series clarinets?

As far as I'm aware, there were constantly changing minor things here and there such as tonehole sizes/placements, keywork pieces, pillars, etc. and maybe some slight bore modifications, but without any actual measurements to compare them both I can't say what exact differences there were. It was more of an evolutionary process at that time instead of suddenly launching a radically different instrument.

I've got a late N-series Bb and it's pretty much identical to an N- and P-series Centered Tone apart from the lack of the CT inscription on the top joint and having the two part domed speaker bush.

The "Selmer Difference" absolutely sounds like a clarinet they would make.

Thanks Bill because I am considering buying a M series at a local shop. I will be play testing it in a couple of days. Is there anything to look for pros and cons.

Check it against a tuner for a start, then listen out for any stuffy notes. Then check the mechanism for any slop, wear or binding keys.

With CTs anyway (N-series onwards) the upper register gets brighter as you go up.

I have M6450, M8448, and N5922. I noted the following, *totally* insignificant variations among them:

**the oldest clarinet (M6450) has the older trill key guard (diamond shaped)
**the newest clarinet (N5922) does not have a flat spring for the C#/G#
**the newest clarinet (N5922) has a differently styled bridge key

My pinkie test of the upper joint didn't reveal any major bore size differences.

The M- and N-series of Selmer Paris clarinets are, in my opinion, the best. As Selmer modified its bore and design to correct the flaws of such a wide-bore clarinet, they compromised the whole Gestalt of their genius. The CT is a lesser instrument (for me).

However, if you want a really great Selmer, get a K series at or before serial number K2790. They're the best of all.

This one has the rounded trill guard and the angled lower joint bridge key. I will check the serial number later today. It belonged to a professional musician so I would think that it plays in tune but I will check it on a tuner. What would the standard size barrel measure Bill? Thanks for your great assistance and expertise.

The barrel should be 67mm on these.
