Has anyone tried wide Velcro as Richard Smith suggests? We don't know much about the physics of ligatures, so it's trial and error, mostly. I have some ideas on how ligatures work, but I haven't been able to test them, yet. On the bass clarinet I find that scotch tape works well. I am partial to string ligatures.
I just found a public finite element site that should allow me to put realistic reed shapes on a website for people to play with. I am finalizing the reed coordinates and when I get them done I will post an attachment, here, with the data. I want to make as much of my research public domain (or creative commons with attribution) that I can.

Wouldn't it be funny if it turned out that scotch tape was the acoustically most perfect ligature? If that were the accepted norm, I'm sure some people on this board would attest that only vintage scotch tape produces the finest tone and freedom.

Why these ?
-Less contact with the reed
- The reed freely oscillating
- Only one clamping unit
- The reed is never crushed but well-positionned

CSO clarinetist, John Bruce-Yeh once advocated using "any metal ligature" when discussing the (then) new, Vandy M-13 Lyre mpc. I think any ligature will produce a slightly different immediant effect, but eventually, like with any new piece of equipement, your ear and oral cavity will return you to your own personal sound. Isn't it a blessing that we all sound different--how boring it would be if everyone sounded and played the same.
FWIW--I prefer the Vany Optimum ligs on all of my clarinets--except my effer on which I play a vintage Winslow lig. Simply because it works......lol.

I'm really into Rovner's new Versa-X ligature. It's only around $35 and you can order online from Weiner Music. This is possibly the only ligature that I can really get all of the benefits of both metal and fabric ligatures all in one.

I'm a Rovner fan too. Lots to choose from and good prices. By the way, all ligatures work, it's how they work for youv that matters depeening on your mouthpiece and reed combination and what you're looking a ligature to do for you. It's best to try a few different ones but if you can't get what you can afford.

While I'm a Rovner and Luyben fan, there are some leather with metal ligatures on the auction site for about $6 that look a lot like some expensive ones and sound pretty good. Good Luck!

I have been using a velcro ligature for 5 years. easy on, easy off, secure, free tone. I think mine is a Home Depot.

Right now I am playing on a ligature that came with an old clarinet that I had. It is made completely of fabric. I just switched teachers and it was suggested to me to look into a new one.

Have you tried a shoelace? It might not be the best ligature there is, but it is certainly inexpensive and it does work quite well.

I second the rovner dark. I'm a fan of rovner ligs, and this basic one is great for the price.

PS - If you're REALLY strapped for cash, go by an office supply store and buy a package of velcro strips made to hold wires together. Might be 2 or 3 dollars. Then you have five ligatures - wrap it a little loosely around the mouthpiece WITHOUT the reed, then take it off, put the reed on, and pull it over the reed/mpc combo. It'll be a tight fit.
Might take a few tries, but velcro actually does make a decent ligature.

The new M/O ligature from Vandoren is very good. It was designed for their new "Masters" mouthpiece but works with any standard mouthpiece.
The M/O ligature is light but strong, and tightens easily with a single screw. I find that it holds the reed well but doesn't inhibit vibrations to any discernible degree. Comes in silver, gold, pewter and black, if I'm not mistaken. Got mine at Vandoren in Paris.

You need to go out to Meridian Winds on Jolly Rd. in Okemos (right across from the HS) and see Eric Satterlee, the owner. He was all the ligatures in stock and you can try them right there.
If you don't know Eric already, you need to meet him if you play clarinet at MSU or in the area. One of his techs is a very fine clarinet player at MSU.

If you want the Herouard & Benard Prélude model ( it's the same as Lebayle Prélude) Here
Concerning the others models , i don't think that they are to be imported in Usa and the only solution is to order online and in France.
All the production is Made in France there! ( Write to Robin Chevreteau)
I know it's not simple to contact them, i had the same problem and then, you must go through by a retailer ARPEGES ( I know this one, they are serious)
