I'm on a national television broadcast this month! My orchestra, the South Dakota Symphony, is accompanying Glen Campbell in a special called Glen Campbell in Concert. It's on PBS. Should I have had a sign saying Hi Mom?

How do you look in a Rainbow-colored afro wig?
Maybe you could get a "Sneezy" dwarf from the Disney store to put on your music stand.
When is the airdate?

Nup -
Should've asked Mr Campbell to autograph the lead-sheet to one of his hits (preferably the music part actually used on the broadcast, pencil marks included) and then had it framed to give to your mum on her birthday.
....oh well....next time....8^)

Gavin said:
"You Americans are strange indeed."
-----------------------------
a. Right. You shouldn't fraternize with us, it _might_ be catching!
b. Land of the Free, Home of the Brave. That _IS_ strange in this world of ours.
c. There is nothing strange about Chris Hill, except that he is an honest, hard working, caring person. Gives freely of himself to other Clarinetists. Chris honors us all.

And apparently some of you also lack a sense of humour. I'd judge from his post, though, that Chris does has a sense of humour. And he most likely is honest, hard working and caring etc - nobody ever said he wasn't. I don't know about the land of the free and home of the brave stuff, though. Don't think you're better than the rest of the world. I could elaborate on the failings of US policy abroad, not to mention the Residency of your latest "democratically" elected head of state, but this has nothing to do with clarinet, so I won't.

Well said Gavin! Without a bit of daffyness now and then, this would be an extremely boring world.

NO, I had no politics ... I just resent those who (obviously) resent (us) Americans!
Stay on (your) Aussie Boards, OK? Its obvious you don't like us. We wouldn't want you to live a double standard, would we now? mw

Chill out mw, your way out of line and I am american.
People who live in other countries are entitiled to their opinion , and american are not the chosen people. Other cultures have much to offer.

Ron, thanks for putting me in my place. BOY, you (must) really read between the lines, don't you. You've said all sorts of things that I must have been thinking, right?
FOR THE REORD: I didn't knock anybody else. I never said that other cultures didn't have much to offer. (Yes, I did defend my "culture") And, I didn't say anybody wasn't entitled to their own opinions. I simply voiced mine, upon hearing someone else voice theirs.

And I thought that you, mw, were the one saying the things I must have been thinking. Where did I make it "obvious" that I didn't like Americans, or that I resented you? What does the bit about double standards mean? And the Aussie Board bit? I can't help thinking I'm missing something particulary witty here.

Chris, I wonder if you had any access to Glen Campbell during your experience? I sang backup (in a chorus) to Jose Carraras during a live performance at the Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City 7 years ago. We were specifically told (actually warned) not to try to approach Carraras. He did speak briefly to us but only as a group.
It was an interesting experience, one I've chosen not to repeat with other "stars" for several reasons. (Singers in the Atlantic City area are often asked, friends have sung for Pavarotti, Andy Williams and Rosemary Clooney among others.) Mostly, I guess backup bores me. (I usually sing classical works.) This was a large arena with 5000 in attendance, definitely the largest audiance I've ever sung or played before except at football games!
This was a stop on a tour for Carraras who was doing a tribute to Mario Lanza that year. He released an excellent CD of this material. (No, I'm not on the CD.) I only did this because I wanted to see Carraras who is a bit of a hero to me both for his singing and his having fought leukemia.
PS, If I had tried a "Hi Mom" I'm sure I'd have been escorted off the stage!
PPS, I still have my stage pass which lists me an an "artist."

mw We must be reading different posts . I did NOT hear anyone attack our culture or country. You seem to have a king size chip on your shoulder. And for the record I am not a mind reader. I welcome comments from abroad. As an american I think that some (not all) of us tend to have a superiority complex and need to come to the reliazation that we are a small part of a very large world.

I think we have the start of a new topic here:
"Has Global Warming" contributed to our being "thin-skinned."?

Regarding the original question...You definitely do NOT say "Hi, Mom." Remember that you are playing with Glen Campbell, a country music star. You say "Howdy, Mom!"

Ok, so Howdy, Mom, it is! (Since it's already being broadcast, I think I'll settle for being glad that I didn't look too goofy on the tape!)
I did get a chance to meet him during the taping in January. He's a nice guy, and we shared a chuckle over my original thoughts on his hit "Witchita Lineman." It was popular when I was about 6 or 7, and I thought it was about a football player!
He's an excellent guitarist.
As for your experience with Carerras,I hate it when some performers think that they are too good to speak with the others who are performing with them. One 1960's rock star insisted that she and her entourage have their own stage door when she performed with us. We had to go in through a side door, then work our way through the building to get to a different stage entrance. We didn't even have access to the backstage bathrooms or water fountains! I felt like reminding her that it is our building, not hers!

Mark - with respect - I would have thought that this bitter exchange would have been a place for you to intervene. Talk about out of hand.
