tuner

I just bought a tuner, and found I was slightly sharp in the upper register and slightly flat in the lower -- that 's with a Buffet Crampon RC and Charles Bay mouthpiece. I took off the mouthpiece patch and am in tune right across the range. I am also spot on with a Van Doren RV5, except on the bottom E, F and G where I am a bit flat. Has anyone else done similar experiments?

Our ears are used to hearing notes go sharper as they go higher because that is how pianos are tuned. It is because a (mathematically) perfect 5th (i.e. with no beat frequency) plus a perfect 4th = more than a perfect octave. The piano tuning is a stretched octave compromise to reduce beat frequencies to being as slow as possible, hance as inconspicuous as possible.

Most flute players play quite sharp in their higher notes. If you are used to tuning with a flute player this could account for it.

I suggest the patch may be a red herring. Yoiu may have adjusted your embouchure subconsciously )eg bitten less) at the same time as removing the patch.
