I'm going to be traveling via airplane in about a week with my (brand) new r13. It definitely will be a carry on, but do you guys have any advice on how I should care for it while it is on the plane?

I have a soft-side Yamaha double case for my clarinets carry-on and simply store them underneath the seat in front of me. Sometimes, I put the double case inside a backpack for easy airport carry and that also fits snugly under the seat in front. My clarinets have always been safe and have traveled many miles with me unharmed. The only hassel is sometimes getting through the security checkpoints, but most TSA are getting better at recognizing musical instruments.

As William said.
I carry my clarinet on airplane trips all the time. My luggage goes in the overhead compartment; the clarinet case goes beneath the seat in front of me.
The TSA has never asked me to open the case or even explain why I have a tiny screwdriver in the case to tighten screws.
Just don't take it out and play it.
