I have a very old looking Buffet Crampon Clarinette made in france with a serial number os 57984 on it. Can anyone tell me more about this item, how much it is worth, how old it is, what type of clarinette?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE

Adam

The keywork identifies your clarinet as the model R13, and the serial number date is from 1957. The case design is also from that period. I don't know what "os" means, but it was probably stamped after the clarinet was made.

R13s from this era sound great, but most have intonation problems, with the clarion register flat at the bottom and sharp on top.

Your barrel is missing the metal ring at the top. This should be replaced to avoid cracking. Most repair shops have drawers full of spare rings and can find one that fits for not much money.

A new barrel with a reverse taper can help both intonation and response. These are a few thousandths of an inch narrower at the bottom than at the top. They're available from Buffet in designs by Moennig and Chadash, and from Phil Muncy through Walter Grabner http://www.clarinetxpress.com/barrels.html or from various custom barrel makers.

Thank you so much for the information. Can you give me a ballpark estimate as to what something like this would be worth?

I truly appreciate your assistance!

Ken - "os" is a typo.

An early R13 will bring $600 on eBay, minus their cut, and occasionally up to $1,000 in prime condition or if it was owned by a pro.
