I've only been to a couple local music camps,I'd like to know which camps are the best. Are the only good ones audition-only, because I'd like to go with a friend? Thanks.

There are lots of good music camps, but since they're all over the world, you should give us an idea where you are. Obviously, if you want to keep expenses down, minimizing travel helps. However, if you have no such restrictions, I know that there are good camps at Domaine Forget in Quebec, and one in Hungary every summer. In terms of your q

sorry about that...enter key got stuck
To continue, most of these camps will require an audition. How many people they let in and what level they accept often depends on the year, but for the good camps, there's often a lot of competition.

The one I go to, no matter how bad you are, you can get in, but you still have to audition for bands and such. Not to say that bad players go there. The price kinda shoos them away.

I'm in Texas and would prefer to stay in the U.S. and cost isn't much of an issue.

I don't know if you've ever gone to Texas Tech Band Camp or Baylor Band Camp, but both are very good. A whole lot of all-state players go to both and the competition is really tough. It will challenge you if you go. I went to it last year, and my private lesson teacher assists Dr. Shanley at the Baylor Camp. But I will not be going this year because I am going to Brevard Music Camp in North Carolina. I had to audition to be accepted into that one, it's six weeks long and really pricey. But if you want to try out for a camp in the future, look at Interlochen, one in Aspen, or Brevard. They offer scholarships, but are pretty expensive if you don't get a scholarship. All those camps have a lot of neat opportunities that the smaller camps don't offer. Hope I could help.

Zannah,
The auditions for most of the better camps have already come and gone (Interlochen, Tanglewood, Domaine Forget, Chautauqua, etc.) and most of the other good music camps are already filled. You have to get going much earlier to get in - most of the audition tapes had to be in by Mar. 15.

Camp Encore/Coda in Maine is a non-audition camp with an excellent program, especially if you are interested in things besides clarinet performance -- musical theater, jazz piano, etc. My older son went there before he went to Interlochen and my younger son went last year and will return this summer. They are on the web and may be full but you can always ask. The deadline for Interlochen this year was February 15th.

Well, 20 years ago the University of Iowa had a decent music camp - band, orch, and choir. It was a 2 week program and we had people from all over the world. Top notch directors too. Good luck.

Mark-
are you sure that the Chautauqua Camp auditions are over?? I havent heard anything about them. If any of you get the opportunity, visit Chautauqua even if you arent going to camp. What a wonderful place!

Yes, they were over March 1. Eli Eban is the clarinet instructor for Chautauqua. My son's on the waiting list - it's a pretty difficult place to get into, mostly grad students, but you never know if you'll make it unless you try!
I've been to Chautauqua quite a few times in my youth (it was a very nice bicycle ride from my home in Williamsville, NY in my high school days - about a 4 or 5 hour run. I rode in a cross-country team back then - geez, that was about 40 pounds ago :^) It's always worth the trip!

yeah, I know what you mean mark. I never tried riding my bike there, but I spent many many days at the Institution, for sectional and all county festivals, as well as just visiting with my friends! Its closer to Fredonia than Williamsville, so maybe Ill have to take a bike ride sometime. : )

Hey, if you're looking for a fun and unstressful music camp, you might look into the University of Georgia's Summer band workshop. I've been twice, and it's great. Anyone can go, but you audition once you get down there. I'm not a super-serious clarinet student, and I really enjoyed the camp.

I agree with Amy. I went to Texas Tech and Texas A&M--Commerce last year. At A&M Frank Tichelli was our director--talk about amazing and what was really great is i was first chair--so guess who he gripped out for the sections problems.....:( ! Texas Tech is really great very competitve but well worth every minute of it. The TMEA and ATSSB Texas All-State people are there. 1st chair all-state last year got 2nd chair top band. There are 10 bands, and 4 full orchestras....an experience you won't soon forget. hope i could help. if you need more info. email me privatly.
--keep swinging--
