Hello.
I need to play Variation of the Firebird Suite(1919 Mcalister ed) for my audition.
I only have a copy of music from Peter Hadcok "The Working Clarinetist".
The book said the suit from the ballet (1919) but the author said that example 3 (No9 to 18) is from 1945 version. Therefore, I'm not sure I can play it from this book or not.
If you know about it and can help me I would appreciate it.

Although I am not home right now I think I know what that is. There is a passage in the older publications and excerpt books that has been found to actually be in the flute part not in the clarinet part. The newest publications do not include that one measure of runs. If you're concerned about it either ask the place you're auditioning for if they use the older or new version or purchase one of the older excerpt books, Bonade or McGinnes -International. I'm pretty sure it's in vol. 1. You could also buy the part or go one line to find it but you still won't know which version they want you to play. Best bet, ask.

The McAlister edition is the corrected edition published by Kalmus in 1985. It is the 1919 Suite, unchanged except for many corrections (like the misplaced flute parts Ed mentions in the Variation). The individual parts as well as the score are available from Kalmus.

Yes -- especially important for this particular piece. I had to do some research on the Firebird recently (the whole ballet, not just the clarinet) and found myself in a labyrinth of revisions, variant versions, badly-edited versions and corrected versions -- and variant critical opinons of all of them! Competition judges can get quite starchy about this sort of thing, so you're doing the right thing by making sure you're on the same page with them -- literally.

True in general, but they've apparently already specified the McAlister edition, which makes very explicit what version they want. Calling them won't hurt (if you can reach someone who knows), but the information in this case has apparently already been provided.
