 Masters Music Ed/Applied Music

I'm looking at the curriculum guides and handbooks to see what's required, and I see that applied lessons and ensembles are missing... Are music education masters students not expected to play/perform in ensembles or are they hiding under a fancy class title?

I understand that our focus is more narrowed on music education as the degree level rises, but I've always found that I learned the most about teaching from observing and participating in rehearsals, lessons, and studio classes.

Things have changed since I received my music ed. masters degree in the early 80s, but there's one thing that I don't think has changed: many (or most) music ed. grad students work on their degrees part-time. I, like most of my fellow students, was employed full-time and took classes at night and during the summer. We were required to take a couple semesters of private lessons, but were not required to perform in a university ensemble. I thought about joining a band or orchestra, but didn't have the time. Universities generally recognize this fact, and usually don't have a performance ensemble requirement.

Depends on where you go-- Illinois State University does require a performing organization every semester, but not applied music. Most do it anyway as an elective.
