A Clarinets for a school program
Author: gwie

I run a high school orchestra program, and am about to acquire one or two A clarinets for students to borrow; I'm on a pretty tight budget though. What are your recommendations and thoughts on the following?

New:
Buffet E-11 (older ones from Germany)
Lyrique Pro (Ridenour)
Allora AAAC-304 (WWBW)
Amati 371

Used:
Buffet R-13
Yamaha?
Leblanc?
Selmer?

THe Lyrique is an excellent instrument, and will never crack.

My vote of those listed would probably be for the used Buffet R-13's. Of course with *any* clarinets you'll want to make sure they aren't "lemons" before purchasing.

My reasoning would be that the R-13 is a standard pro model (please no one hurt me for saying that, I know people use other types too!) and should turn out to be a pretty good experience to use for the students.

Of course, if the type of students that are using them are the type not to care about or for the instruments they borrow (I'd hope not!) then I suppose you might be best off with just whatever is cheapest.

Of what you have listed probably any would be good. Other than the R-13, I don't have personal experience with them except for a pro model Yamaha I was borrowing once. I can say I really did like the Yamaha, but at least the one I was using had a few significant intonation problems.
