 Cool solution to silver tarnish

After having a problem with the silver tarnishing due to playing as well as other factors, I thought that I would let everyone know about a way to drastically keep those keys shining. 3M makes a product called Silver Strips. They last for about 3 or 4 months and you just set them somewhere in your case to prevent tarnish. I don't know if they are commercially availiable but you can get them from any jewelry store. I have yet to try them but I know that many flute players use them. If you use or have used them, let us know.

I cannot recommend using toothpaste as a tarnish treatment. Most toothpastes available here in the US contain some abrasive materials that do a great job scraping plaque off teeth. This fine grit will do a real number on your silver keywork, just like a rouge cloth.

I personally use the Hagerty silver tarnish prevention strips for my silver keyed clarinet. They work great. I bet the 3M product works on the same principle. The chemical in the paper traps a lot of the tarnish gases before they can react with the silver keywork inside the case. Since an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, go for prevention and use whatever brand of silver prevention strip you can find. Since one small strip can last for 6 months inside a soprano clarinet case, a package of 10 strips for a few dollars is well worth the investment, compared to keeping the keywork polished at great expense in either labor or money, or both.

I agree toothpaste is not good.In stead I recommend plastic erasers for quick solution. It can be used also to remove lip colour smearing our faces.
