These come up on eBay occasionally. As you can see from the pictures, it is a different way of laying out the throat Ab, A, Bb, and trill mechanisms. I've never handled one so I can't say if it is better or worse than normal Boehm. The linkages seem a bit more complex so, at least in theory, it would be a little more difficult to repair and perhaps more prone to get out of adjustment.

Thanks, Mike B, Dee describes it quite well. I have seen but never owned or worked on one, but would like to! As I recall there are 3 US patents on it, the Mazzeo has 5 pats I believe, prob. could find them in my archives if requested. Will watch the auction. Don

The two McI patents I have, US 2,887,001 and 3,015,981 [this one describes the UJ keying, Laur] which seems to match what I can discern from the pics. From a quick look at the pat, not having the horn, it appears that G#/Ab is obtained by the ring activated by the 3rd finger left hand, A is obtained by both 3rd and 2nd fingers, and Bb by 2nd and 1st [maybe 3rd also!] with the thumb open. The mechanisms to do all this are complex, but are shown in Fig. 25 of the pat. [if the commercialized version is the same as the pat!!!] . They [Thomas and Robert] brag about a large tone hole to give a clean Bb. This may be more than anyone wishes to know, but there is more to be said. Brymer described the Mazzeo, I dont recall anyone describing the McI, which didn't make it commercially either. "Nuff for now? Don

Check the klarinet archives for previous discussions on this system.
