Buffet Clarinet W/ extra pinky key! Help
Author: phoebewillows

I had a wooden Buffet Clarinet with an extra pinky key when I played Clarinet. I loved that Clarinet and for some reason my band teacher drooled all over it when I got it. It was given to me by my Aunt and was used in the 60s by her son. I remember the extra key because I also played Bass Clarinet and again my band teacher loved it. He wanted to keep it in his office safe and not the lockers. He wouldn't let me use it at football games out of fear it would get ruined. I used it mostly for Symphony Orchestra and my other Clarinet for marching band. Well my mom got a hold of it and sold it to a music shop to get my sister a flute. I was super upset and tried swapping clarinets but the name and the extra key were a dead give away.

I am having a hard time finding a Buffet Clarinet with this extra key. I know the keys were silver and the clarinet was wood. It was beautiful and I would love to find another one esp with that key. I don't know model information and after three hours of googling I give up!

I want to get back into playing Clarinet. I really enjoyed when I did and I played for 10yrs.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Was the extra key for the right hand or the left hand?

Best regards,

There are two kinds of additional keys for the little finger.

The first (which your clarinet probably didn't have) is an additional spatula for the right little finger. It's on the bottom row below the low E key. This operates an additional pad that extends the range down to low Eb. See http://www.lynsgarden.co.uk/Rosecroft/Clarinets/Full%20Boehm_035.jpg.

The second type is for your left little finger. It is between and above the keys for low E and F# and lets you open the low G# hole. It's indistinct on the picture I linked to above but is clearly visible at http://www.clarinetsource.com/leblanc-full-boehm-bb-clarinet-excellent/.

The second type appears on most top of the line Buffet clarinets, such as the R13 Prestige http://www.buffet-crampon.com/en/instruments.php?mode=productDetails&pid=110. It's possible, though expensive, to add this key to a standard clarinet.

You can order a regular (non-Prestige) R13 with the LH Ab/Eb lever.

Honestly, for my money, I'd order a buffet festival. Would probably cost about the same as an R13 + Eb lever, but I like the festivals better and, IMO, it's a better instrument and more consistent (meaning more likely you'll get a good instrument on your first order instead of maybe receiving a not so great R13)

The first link you linked to

http://www.lynsgarden.co.uk/Rosecroft/Clarinets/Full%20Boehm_035.jpg

THAT is exactly what mine looked like! That is it, that is the key! It all looks like the one I had. It was made of wood and they keys were silver. My aunt gave it to me and it was in a really nice case that had an additional leather case over it. My cousin played it in the 60s and she bought it new. I know it was pretty expensive from what she has said. I have to lie when she asks about it now! I want to strangle my mother. I loved that clarinet. It was the best out of the three I had!

I played bass clarinet as well. I'm in the market to buy both a clarinet and a bass clarinet.

So the one I had would have been a Boehm? I am going by the name on the link with the picture.

Thanks!

Thanks :)

Me too.

You would think after 15 yrs I would have gotten over it but no I haven't. I knew it was a great instrument and I wanted to keep it!! It played beautifully! I won all kinds of medals at band/symphony competitions playing that clarinet.

Ken,

I did a little googling and this is what it looked like. The case even looked like this only it had one Clarinet in it not two. There was also the outer leather zipper case. The Clarinet was purchased by my Aunt for my cousin to play in some Parade. I am not sure which one it was but when I speak to my mom again I will ask her if she remembers. I might just ask my other Aunt since bringing the Clarinet up to my mom gets me a little pissy with her. :D I think it was in New Zealand or somewhere in Australia that he played it. It was only played for this particular trip then it sat in a closet til I got it. I had the pads redone and that was about it. It shined like crazy too when polished all up.

Link it came from about half way down where it says Boehm.

Thank you!

Now is there anywhere I can get another one of these Clarinets? I don't care if it needs pads or springs or work done on it. I have a place locally that I used for all my Clarinet needs when I use to play regularly that I can have it overhauled at.

If what you're looking for is what's known as a "full-Boehm" clarinet, then please contact me offline.

HAHAHA! Those are my Selmers in that photo!

The one in the middle of this photo (click on following link) is a Buffet full Boehm from the early '60s, but it's not in the best shape. The top joint had split down the front and back and been pinned and very recently I used it to practice carbon fibre banding on. The Selmer CT on the right of it has now been fully restored and silver plated and is now my main clarinet. Considering the condition it was in previously, it has by means of a minor miracle turned out to be my favourite clarinet of all time.

Yea when I said it looked like yours I mean the extra key for the right pinky hand :) Most people when I mention it think I'm mistaken about where the key was. I'm so glad I found this forum, shows I wasn't making it up! I will NEVER forget that Clarinet!

OH WOW those are all yours?!?!

I would have had quite the collection but my mother felt the need to get rid of all my Clarinets when I moved out of the house. I will start my own collection now.

Those are all very nice instruments. Do you play professionally?

If I could find one like i had I'd be all over it...depending on price that is lol.

I want to start playing again, it's been about 10yrs since i picked up a Clarinet. Any suggestions on what a good one to start with would be?

While I studied clarinet at college I never went pro. I still get a reasonable amount of playing when it comes to pit work, but I'm mostly called to play oboe and cor or band parts with both single and double reeds as not many single reed players double on oboe.

I bought those Selmer Series 9s off eBay and restored them. The Buffet in the other photo was bought locally and the Leblanc LL was bought used from Howarth as that was the clarinet I wanted as a teenager until a pair of old Selmers came my way and it's been large bore Selmers ever since.

Since you played a Full Boehm Buffet maybe this was the model that you played.

Now I know what the Buffet full Boehm I've got should look like! Shame it had such a hard life.

What is strange with it is how tiny the toneholes are compared to a standard R13 (which are tiny compared to a Selmer CT).

Chris,

My sister played Oboe, she switched after a year because my mom couldn't stand the sound of practice. :D Her switching is how my beloved Buffet got sold :(

I never played Clarinet professionally either although I would. I really enjoyed it. I hope to join the local orchestra here next year. It runs from April to August so that gives me plenty of time to practice and get back to where I can actually play!

I am thinking of finding an older Buffet that needs work and just doing it myself. I have read and watched a few vids on repadding and such and it looks like I'd be able to do it just fine plus it would save me a heck of a lot of money. I dont think

Stevesklar,

Ohhh pretty! What model is that? I will have to bust out some old band pics to look at mine, if I can even see anything in those pics. I know I have some band pics some where.

Where would I purchase one of these Buffets? I have looked online and I"m probably not searching properly but I'd like to see what they cost on the low end with repairs needed..if I can find one.

Thanks

if you had my mom you'd still have that clarinet - and everything else you and your brothers and sisters owned from infancy, as well magazines, chicken pot pie pans, yogurt containers, curtains, etc. going back to the 1950's. Of course you'd have to sort through a LOT of junk to find it!
