i'm re-writing a piece that is too difficult to read. my staff and notes are larger than the original so the measures arent matching up line for line. if the notes extend to the next line, does the end of the previous measure get closed even tho its not the end of the measure or do i leave it open. sorry, i dont know if im wording my quesion right. do you guys know what i mean?

However it is better for the player if you carry the whole measure to the next line if it can be completed on the current line. This is particularly true if there is anything that might be a little tricky to count. Of course if it is just for yourself, you don't really need to worry about that too much.

ok, this piece (bachs organ fuge for clarinet choir) is in 4/4 time and in one measure there is a quarter note followed by some rest symbols which I cant make out clearly followed by 3 8th notes. im almost positive one of the rests is an 8th, but the other one REALLY looks like a dotted quarter but that doesnt make sense to me. it should be a quarter and an 8th right????
i hope its ok im asking these questions here...not really clarinet related. let me know if its not right.

It's not uncommon for there to be random marks on the page or small inkblots particularly if this is a copy of the manuscript page rather than being typeset. So long as you are sure that the notes are a quarter note and three 1/8s then there has to be a beat and a half rest.

....watch out for one older style of quarter-note (crotchet) rest which looks like an eighth-note (quaver) rest backwards.
