Hi John - Since you are not getting much comment, I'll tell you about my good old Conn clar. ,key of C, 17/6 plastic prob. hard rubber, ser no C108210L which is well in tune [with minor mouthpiece-shortening, for my infrequent use]. It has in an oval on the lower joint, C G Conn, Elkhart Indiana , and on the bell a "flying eagle" with "trade mark". I also have an old Conn Bass cl [to low E !], dated about 30's-40's, has double register keys and plays fairly well, on loan now, can get the ser no if you wish. Don

Hi Don,
Thanks for the info. I understand these rubber Conns are good for jazz playing since they have a wide bore and will withstand a lot of abuse! However I don't know much about the dates of manufacture etc. They are available on Ebay from time to time around $60- $130.

Hi Don !
I hate to get off the subject but I am interested in any info you have about old Conn Bass Clars, I have one that I bought used from a retiring musician who said he was the original owner & thought it also was from the 40's as far as he could remember. The Serial # is 4356V, it is marked with the 3 "bandsmen" & says made in France. It goes to Eb,has double reg key & LH Ab/Eb key. This horn plays quite well, it has great tone, and is in remarkable shape for it's age. I have not been able to find any info on it, so anything you know would be helpful. TIA

Hi Flatlander [we are also "plains" here in River City, Okla!] I cant do you much good re: ser # since Conn has such a complex no'ing system. I date my bass as 40-50's, it has the 2 reg. keys, goes only to low E, has no "altissimo-hole" for the left 1st finger , ser#482NP339997L. I suspect yours is a "stencil" made [in France] by, possibly, a large maker. The 3 bandsman trademark should help date it[mine doesnt have it], in the 60's? when Conn was one of the very best! The only patent {Loney, inventor]I have is for several lower extensions to the lower joint to provide low D, C#, and C. You might look in [I think] Equipment-How Old is My right here on Sneezy [correct ? Mark] and ask others. Luck, Don

Hi Don, Thanks for the response.
I have struck out everywhere trying to get any info on my Bass. The only Conn #'s I have been able to find are for Bb Clars and I really haven't come across anyone else who has an old Conn Bass. Your ser# & mine aren't anything alike so that doesn't shed any light on the mystery. I guess I'll just keep plugging along with it, & appreciate what I've got.I'm not sure if a new horn would be any better than this one & considering that I was able to buy it pretty cheap I guess I got lucky. I only live about an hour away from Rick Sayre and Sayre Woodwinds gives it a tweak every few months but considering that it's an older horn & that I play it at least 6-8 hrs a week that's to be expected from what I hear. Thanks again for your reply it's good to know I'm not the only one out here playing on an old Conn, a person could get a complex about not having a Buffet or Leblanc if they read this list too long but we aren't all pros & it's hard to justify spending $5000-$6000 on a hobby ( At least that's what I call my playing, it's sounds nicer than addiction! )
