I am repadding an old Martin Freres Coudet model. I found the two metal holes in the upper joint epoxied on the side (inside). I understand adding epoxy to top or bottom (inside) to raise or lower pitch. But why on the side? Thank you.

This is the left side of the thumb hole.
Another question about this clarinet. The spatula keys are pinned and loose. I remember seeing cellophane paper in another clarinet. Is it the recommended practice? Thanks.

FYI, both the thumb hole and the register vent are metal. Both have epoxy on the inside, left and right.

That has me a bit concerned. I have a Martin-Freres Coudet-Paris (S/N: 430) and I am not able to detect any epoxy (or other glue, inside or outside) on either the register thumb hole or the register vent. Both are tight though. When restoring it, there were some issues regarding bringing it into tune to an A-440 std, but I regarded this as having to do with a slightly different barrel that I added to replace the original.

Don't be afraid to mess with your clarinet, it's not a precious gem or a historical artifact of great value --- it's an old clarinet of middling quality that's worth little or nothing on the market. Have at it! Take the glue off, do whatever you think needs doing without fear.
