This will be my third year playing clarinet with braces and I am going to have them taken off next month, has anyone gone through this same situation?
oh and after I have them taken off, I will be attending the Berklee College of Music for a 5 week program in jazz improv. Will having my braces taken off affect my playing significantly? should I wait until i get back from Berklee to have them taken off?

Many years ago, but when my braces came off my sound improved immediately. Certainly playing was more comfortable, but it was more than that, a big difference. I'd struggled to make a good sound with braces -- maybe the metal deadened resonance in my face, maybe it just hurt to make a firm embouchure, I don't know. But when they came off it was like I'd been running in weighted boots.

I think you will be fine. I agree with JHowell. I'm glad you are going to Berklee for some jazz. It's a top ranking school for jazz so have a blast! Let us know how you liked the jazz program.
Are you playing the sax too?

My most recent episode of braces was about 6 years ago. (First time was back in the dark ages when I was a teenager) When they came off my stamina improved immediately. It took me a nanosecond to become accustomed to the new feel. I would recommend getting them off ASAP!

After orthodontia, my lower arch collapsed leaving a whole flock of sharp edges to gouge my lower lip. Now I need a protective cover over them.

@JHowell: I hope my situation will turn out to be like yours.
@Bob: I will post a forum when the program finishes on how it turned out. I have taken up the alto sax, but I have little desire to pursue it further, maybe this program will change that but until then, I will stick with the clarinet.
@marcia: I leave for Berklee on July 6, there's still time to get them off but I have to wait 4 weeks from my last visit and my braces will have to be taken off four days before I leave.
@Bob Phillips: Did you use wire retainers? I believe I will be receiving the invisalign style retainers.

DanzClarinerd - kind of an interesting story. When I got into the Air Force band I was accepted as a clarinet player. I didn't do much clarinet playing at all. Maybe 15 concerts out of about 900 or more. Mainly the tenor and alto sax, however I was best on the soprano sax and I never played it! Life doesn't make sense sometimes! If you want, try the alto, since you seem to like it a tiny bit see what happens. Oh, I still enjoy the clarinets, A, Bb, and the little Eb, but not the bass clarinet, followed by the sop. sax, the tenor and finally the alto. The bari hardly ever gets any solo's, so it's not much fun for me to play.
I'll leave the bass clarinet playing to the gifted Eddie Palanker! After 50 or more years of playing in the Baltimore Sym. he must be great!
Again, enjoy your summer. I wish I was going!
