Festival vs. R-13
Author: Amanda Rose

Okay. I'm just curious. I recently bought an R-13. I tried like 10 R-13s and 5 Festivals. I ended up not liking the R-13s. Is that weird? The extra key would be nice (I've had instances where you have to slide), but I couldn't get the sound quality out of the Festival.

I know some people love the Festivals. So, what is the difference? Is the bore size the same? I know the wood isn't stained on the Festivals, but that's all I can remember. It's stained on the R-13s isn't it?

How different is the Festival from the R-13?

Amanda Rose

(Out of curiosity, do they make auxillary Eb levers that you can have put on clarinets? I don't know how they work, but it seems like it would be possible.)

Amanda, do a search here on Festival. I know I put the differences somewhere here. The changes had mostly to do with thumbhole / register vent / a couple of tonehomes / undercutting.

I have a Festival and my son just got a used R-13. When I bought the Festival I tried clarinets for hours on different days. I very much prefered the Festivals and got the one I liked the best (I had three to choose from, lucky me.)

I just got my son a used R-13, from another Sneezer (Sneezyite?) and I think I like its tone just a tiny bit better than my horn's! (Thanks Bob! how are Angel and Alpha Dog anyway?)

The eb key is nice though. I believe the individual horns vary more than R-13 v Festivals, but I prefered all of the Festivals I tried to any of the half dozen R-13s I tried when I bought mine. Just play a bunch of horns a pick the best.

THe one thing that is different about the festival clarinet is the higher register key location. It brings up the left hand twelfths up. I don't play on a festival, but I had Guy Chadish move my register key up to that location. It helped out a lot with my tunning all around including the higher notes. Now i have to raise my tongue a little more when playing in the higher notes, but it doesn't bother me as much Also my horn played more focused and I got the resitance when i got it moved up.

I liked the festival when I tried it out. It has very nice sound and I guess that extra e flat key is good. I know on the schools bass clarinet i am playing on, the extra e flat key i use is good at times, but i also know if i use it too much, my left hand starts to hurt. I don't think it would be the same same kindof pain on a festival considering it is a smaller instrument.

Good luck with your new horn.

pat

I recommend R-13 selected by Greg Smith and customized by a famous
customize, which is sold via International Musical Supplier(its owner is herself
clarinetist). If I were to have money, I would buy one definitely.

Festivals have a larger bore size than r 13's. The r 13 prestige has the same tenon rings as the festival and I believe it is also available with the left hand g#/d# extra key.

Can you give me a reference for that? I have a posting, http://www.sneezy.org/Databases/Logs/1999/07/001212.txt, where Francois Kloc talks of the entry cones of the R13, RC, Festival and Prestiges being 14.64 mm. Perhaps there's a widening somewhere else that you're talking about? Or perhaps Francois was mistaken?

Amanda,

Festival is not better or worst than R13. They are two different instruments. The bore is different, and the length too.

Some people prefer R13, some prefer Festival. It's a question of personal taste. Some people prefer rice to pasta. It's the same.

When I got my clarinets, I went to the buffet factory and tried everything. I went for RC standard, though I could afford more expensive models. My RC's are the instruments I like the most.

If you prefer Festival to R13, then YOu should sell your R13 and buy a festival.

If it's just for the extra keys, any good woodwind technician can sort this out. THe important is the tube not the keys. Keys are always customizable. First find a good tube, then adjust the keys like you want.

Regards

Daniel
