 Selmer HS*

Ok. Since there have been alot of postings about mouthpieces lately, it has made me evaluate mine. I was wondering if the selmer hs* was an "open" mouthpiece, or a "closed" mouthpiece? I like it and I want to know for future reference. Thanks :)

According to WWandBW catalog, the HS* mpc is a closed mpc. I have one, and although it has a very nice tone, the volume is low.

The stock Selmer HS* is a very closed mouthpiece, tip opening on mine measured 0.97 mm. If you look at most mouthpiece charts, this is approaching the limit on the closed side.

I have several of these mouthpieces, most have been refaced to open them to about 1.03 mm. Sound like a small difference, but it does change the character significantly.

I believe I saw a chart where the HS* is listed as 1.02 or 1.03 mm, smaller than the 5RV-L. I use one on my otherwise very bright C clarinet that I use for playing for contra dances. The low volume is perfect for playing in rehearsals in people's living rooms with quieter instruments like fiddles and hammered dulcimers. Since I started using it I get no complaints about playing too loudly. It is a bit harder to blow than the 5RV-L but I can get the altissimo in better tune on my C with the HS*, never flat.

Guys and Gals...
Drew is correct, according to the Selmer web page....the H* is a close MPC with an openig of 0.97.
While we're on the subject...I'm thinking of getting a Selmer F or G. Open MPCs
1.40 for the F and 1.50 for the G. Maybe a VanDoren 5JB which is 1.47. Anyone have any comments on those and how they play? Thanks....

Wow, didn't realize that the opening of the HS* was that small. Do they get much smaller?

While I'm sure that the chart in the Woodwind & Brasswind isn't comprehensive, it lists only one mouthpiece with a smaller tip opening than the HS*

Definitely closed. And it is short lay mouthpiece. Very resistant.
I used to use one. I liked its tone but not its too much resistance.

I don't like it's resistance either. Can you think of a make / model with the same low volume projection, but with less resistance, and would work well on a C?

Why not try Selmer's C85series(115,118,120)? They are not too registant.
