 Storage Care For Second Clarinets

My primary clarinet is a Buffet RC Prestige clarinet. I take care of it like nothing else. The question that I have concerns my second clarinet which is a Leblanc Concerto. I don't use the Concerto at all and I worry that it dries out so much.

The truth is that I don't know how to care for a clarinet that I don't use. Should I let it dry out and then slowly introduce it to moisture over a period of weeks before using it again? Or do I continually care for it by making sure that it has enough moisture in it at all times?

I live in Iowa and the seasons here are average all around. Is there a certain procedure that I should follow to keep my stored clarinet in an optiumum state? And what is that state?

Any info? How do you others care for your second clarinets?

Matt - I am sure I don't take adequate care of my several wood horns. My LeBlanc L 7 dries out due to the winter season's low [absolute] humidity, and the bell ring becomes loose, so I periodically refill the humidifier and supplement if needed by damp paper-toweling. I suggest this should be done, at least for the better cl's, and ring loose-ness in a good test method to check frequently. We have discussed this before here, with a variety of opinions given! Don

Boy, Matt I don't have much to add but give me a puff off that before you throw it away. "I live in Iowa and the seasons here are average all around." I live in Iowa also and MY seasons are not average. Neither is my GAS BILL for heating--that's over the moon. And, I'm up to my hips in ice and snow. :-[

Argh! Don,t talk about gas bills, Bob. I may have to get an old wood stove and stoke it with old Pan Ams & Chineese clarinets from eBay. It "wood" be cheaper.

Try playing your second instrument occasionally. Practice on both horns and keep them oiled. Always open your case and allow whatever instrument you are playing to adjust to the temperature of the room before you blow it. You are petty lucky to have two such instruments so you should respect them both.

Matt- It is'nt too bad to warm up a little on one clarinet and then switch to your preferred instrument for the more serious daily work. I have been rotating three instruments this way for several years. None of them seems to be "drying out". This way, I notice, and get to correct mechanical problems as they occur, rather than finding a surprise upon pulling out a "backup horn". I used to feel the differences in the way that the keys were positioned as a small annoyance, but now it is more of a pleasant change of pace. Of course, if the concerto really bothers you, just mail it over 8>). Todd
