 Eb clarinet made by whom?
Author: RonaldP

Hello;
I just bought what I think is an Eb clarinet, not to play, but to tinker with. I really would like to know who made it but have had no luck looking on line.
There are no maker's marks or serial numbers that I have been able to discern
Anybody help? It's a wooden instrument looks to be grenadilla wood including the mouth piece. 19 5/8 inches long and has a 13 mm bore, the mouthpiece tip is broken off. There are several (7) keys that have black dots on the finger pad ends. The barrel is 41 mm long. The thumb rest has 3 screws to mount it to the clarinet.
Thanks,
Ron

any chance of a few photos? and is this an albert system horn? BTW those dots are the ends of the screws which hold the flat springs onto the underside of the keys.

What you have there looks like a C19 simple-system form of Albert clarinet. Judging by the keywork I'd guess it dates from around 1870 - 1890. Note it does not have a patent C# (patented in 1861 by Joseph Tyler) which was ubiquitous by 1900. The keywork looks french to me but I don't think it's a Couesnon (who made a lot of these unmarked horns) or a Buffet. Interesting point is the underslung speaker key - a wraparound key was practically de rigeur on french clarinets until the early C20 - even on boehm system models. Makes me think it's just possibly a later build to an earlier design.

It could be a Freres. I have one very similar except mine has no ring keys on the lower joint. Mine also has no markings and a peg thumb rest. Other than those differences it looks identical.

Thanks for the replies! I spent several hours checking out previous posts about Albert system horns. I went looking on line for photos but didn't find anything, except a Mueler that had keywork that looked similar but not everything matched up.
Still looking.
