Haven't played clarinet in years- help!

So I played the clarinet throughout middle school, but after that only had a year of (not very enjoyable) private lessons, and so I stopped. Six years later, I'm in college now and I want to pick it up again. I've only played a few times over the past couple of days, and I've been having issues. I can't get out the low E/F or the middle C/B, no matter how hard I try. Also, all my notes are at least one whole note too flat, and no matter what I do, I can't get it in tune. I'm wondering if it's just me, and it'll get better if I keep practicing, or if I should see if something happened to the instrument after all those years of sitting in the case. Any advice?

When you say that you are a whole note flat do you mean that when you play in front of an electronic tuner that the note displayed is different from what you are playing? Keep in mind that electronic tuners typically have readouts in concert pitch (key of C) while your clarinet is a transposing instrument in the key of Bb. As a result when you play a written C on your clarinet the electronic tuner will show it as a concert Bb.

If your pitch problems aren't a result of misinterpreting the readout of the tuner then I would suggest bringing your clarinet to a repair tech and having it checked for leaks. If it has b een sitting for a few years without having been played it wouldn't surprise me if it has developed a few leaks which can play havoc with you intonation.

The Low E, middle B thing just sounds like a leak. Take it to a tech and have him get it into shape first.

I second the above assessment of pitch.
