 Ligatures/Legere reeds
Author: babrinka77

Hello everybody!
My Legere Signature arrived last week, it works pretty well with my mouthpiece, but i think the Rovner Light ligature is not the best for those reeds.
Any recomendations? i have heard that metalic ligatures work better with synthetic reeds, is that right? I'm thinking about a Vandoren Optimum.

Thanks!!

I was using a Rovner with the Legere and would agree. My optimum sounds much better with them. Better response too.

I was using the Rovner Versa before but there was always this annoying quality to the tone. I recently got a silver-plated Rico-H ligature, and it has eliminated that really annoying sound. Really impressed with the Legere Signature, especially with the Rico-H ligature.

I use the Rovner Eddie Daniels or the Rovner MKIII and it works just fine. (I think the eddie daniels is now called the Versa). And I do use the metal rails part when I use the Eddie Daniels.

You might want to check to see if that perceived annoying tone quality is something that is heard further away, or only because it's transmitting through your mouth and whatnot. Record yourself with the recorder far enough away that it'd be about an "audience's distance" and see how it sounds.

Thanks for the advises!
I haven't made a decision yet, i'm also thinking about the Vandoren Optimum/master or the BG traditional ligature, i have read very good things about those ligatures.
Checking the Legere website endorsers section i have realised that many of them use metalic ligatures, so i will buy one of this kind, just have to decide which one ,-).

Alexi, i'll try to do what you sugest, thanks for the advise.

I contacted Legere recently about ligatures and they recommended me the BG Duo ligature for Legere reeds. Not sure if it works but do give it a try too if possible.

Yeah, i had checked it also, but 140$ is too much for me, maybe if they had a cheaper version (instead of gold plated) i'd buy one, it looks great, and recomended for synthetic reeds.

I play Legere signatures, and found that the Rovner isn't secure enough. The Legere reeds are very fussy about precise placement on the m/p, and the Rovner allows too much movement to be reliable. Switching to a conventional metal ligature fixed the problem.

I use Bonade ligature and it is fine.

On alto sax, I've preferred the Rico H ligature...definitely seems to seal better than Rovner classic or light.

On clarinet, I keep coming back to the Vandoren Klassik string ligature...it seems to give the best response for me with Legere. Rico H wasn't bad, but I just liked the Klassik better.

I have used Legere Signatures with a Rovner Eddie Daniels model with very good success. Sadly, I don't believe Rovner makes the Eddie Daniels model anymore. At least, I didn't find it on their website.

I had the same problem of needing to finely adjust the position of the reed. I solved it by using a velcro ligature, which allows one to do the fine adjusting with the ligature in place. PS: I described the way I made velcro ligatures in a previous BB comment a few years ago.

I think the "Versa" model is essentially the same ligature.

A Robert Vinson serves me very well on clarinet. On tenor sax, the stock lig works fine on a Link STM.

Try the BG Revelation ligature as it holds the reeds well and sounds good. I use it on my R13 and even played my Enduro reed with it the other day, sounding pretty good. Made of white plastic by Brilhart, Enduro is the reed that Artie Shaw chose to use in 1940 and recorded his "Stardust" famous solo using it.
