 Musical Number for Graduation
Author: CuriousClarinet

My band director has asked me to play a clarinet or bass clarinet solo for our High School graduation in May. Our school had auditions for the numbers last night, and apparently only one rather pitchy singer showed up. She told me that one of my solo's I played for competition would be fine. But I don't really want to spend another month playing the Mozart Concerto and Deepwood (bass clarinet). They're getting a little boring. So does anybody have any other suggests of what I should perform? Perhaps something that's a little more... graduation-esk?

Probably on a slightly easier level than the two I listed above, since I'll have less than a month to learn the piece. No longer then 5 minutes at the most. Thanks. =)

I think you and a soloist could do a jazzy rendition of Gary US Bonds' song "School is Out". That would be pretty easy and under 5 minutes.

For a graduation ceremony, it's probably best to keep things light. Neil has a good suggestion. Or, what about a Gershwin tune--I know that there have been many that have been arranged for clarinet and piano.

Can you round up a clarinet quartet? Here is Brahms' 'Academic Festival' overture, arranged for that ensemble

The complete work wouldn't be feasible, but perhaps your director could help you work out a shortened version.

Here is the same work arranged for clarinet choir

Do you possibly still have the music for Deepwood? Could you possibly scan it and email it to me.

I played an unaccompanied improvisation on "America the Beautiful" at my High School graduation--wanted it to sound somewhere between Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner and a Miles Davis tune, but on clarinet. It went over well, but you've gotta know your audience...

Not sure if this is your thing, but definitely keep it festive/patriotic/graduation-y. Avoid variations on "We Don't Need No Education." (Not the right venue).
