This has really nothing to do with playing the clarinet, but my friend, also a clarinetist, and I were wondering about pronunciations of different brand names. She has a Noblet, and we were debating on if it's said "nobl-ay" or "nobl-ett." Also, for that matter, how do you say Buffet? Thanks in advance for satisfying our curiosity (and sorry about the stupid question!)

Noblet = No - blay
Buffet = Boo - fay
Both are French names and should be given the French pronunciation.

Noblet sounds like NO-BLEY. Buffet sounds like BOO-FAY. By the way, no questions are considered stupid if they are sincere. Good to hear from you and good "KLAR-Y-NETTING!!!!!!!!!

Not at all a stupid question, when a language nerd like me is around ;-)
Noblet is "no-BLEH", with stress on the last syllable. If you made a bet, I would say that the winner is the one who went for "nobl-ay".
Same for Buffet: "buf-FEH", but here there's another trick: the "u" is actually not pronounced as a "u", but as the german ü, u with "Umlaut". There's no real equivalent to this sound in english - it's something like the "y" i "you", but longer, pronounced like a real vowel instead of the consonant-like sound in "you".

Like Politics, all Pronunciation is local.
Ask anyone in Georgia how to say "Albany", it will be diff'rnt from us NewYawkas.
As a card carrying member of "Vowels for Bosnia", I can tell you that the only thing a music shop proprietor cares about is "Which one" and "Cash or credit".
I get enough language lessons visiting Montreal, jeezit.

Amerian people is the worst peaple to ponunciate French.
1.Accent comes not on the first but the last sylable.
2.'et' pronunciates just 'e'. No y.

We Americans kinda butcher English quite well also, especialy in the south. Years ago it was probably more from ignorance. Today, its tradition. Its amazing how we Texans kinda pour on the Texas accent a little more when in the presence of Northerners.

Hiroshi,
We use the "y" to indicate a long "a" sound such as in our word "play". Separately the"y" is not pronounced. If we were to use just an "e" to indicate the sound, most Americans and perhaps most speakers of English, would either pronounce it like "feet" or "pet," both of which would be incorrect for Buffet.

Actually there is a reasonable history behind almost any accent. The "Texas" accent is derived from the general "Southern" accent. In turn, the "Southern" comes from the pronunciation used in certain parts of England at the time the South was settled. That pronunciation pattern has died out in England but is preserved in the American South.

Hey Willie,
First time I drove through Tyler, I knew how Moses felt seeing the Promised land.
By the time I got to El Paso, I understood why SouthWest airline was so successful. Compared to my hometown in North Carolina, Texans have no accent 'tall.
"That's right, you're not from Texas, but Texas wants you anyway."
If you wish to hear beautifully spoken English, with good manners behind it go to Charleston, SC or Plano, TX. None of these people would ever correct the pronunciation of a guest, at least not in public.
Having slaughtered my share of French in the presence of Quebecoise in Montreal and elsewhere, I suggest we lighten up. So long as a language is being mangled daily, it lives.
What's next, "How long should a clarinet player grow fingernails?"
My spud meter is pegging over this.

Which all reminds me of an ex-president who was out walking his dog when he was stopped by another gentleman. The gentleman asked if the ex-president's name should be pronounced Ree-gan or Ray-gan. The ex-president responded Ray-gan. The gentleman then asked the ex-president the breed of his dog. He responded "it's a bagel".
I suspect the success of communication is more important than the precise means, although the original question was fair and valid.
