I was substituting at the Hickory High School in North Carolina this week and there was a student who sat out doing math homework. Her clarinet was badly broken and her family could not afford to fix it. If so, I could put you in contact with the band director.

This sounds like a very immediate need (and kudos to you for trying) so the following ideas might not work but, the band director should know about:
The Mr. Holland Opus Foundation provides instruments to schools.

Donorschoose.org is an organization where the band director can solicit donations to help buy instruments and supplies.
Finally, if someone reading this board can donate an instrument, it would be helpful to know what the student is/was currently playing: Wood? Plastic? Bb?, etc. Could be the band director should post and also talk about skill level, commitment level, etc.

The quickest way would be to check out pawn shops, goodwill, and the salvation army for a playable instrument. I paid $5 for my daughters Evette at a goodwill (plus $60 to tune it up) and it served her well for a number of years (and is now used for marching band). Seeking donations will probably take more time, raising a little bit of cash would probably be quicker.
