 W. German Buffet

Recently picked up online (for cheap) what I assumed was an R13. It looks like all other R13s I've seen. There is only the standard Buffet logo on the bell and upper joint. The serial #24xxxx would make it c. 1983 if it was an R13. However, just above the serial number on the upper joint, in nearly microscopic lettering can be discerned "MADE IN W GERMANY." Could this be an E13 without a stamp?

What you have is a student level clarinet. Most likely it's an E11.
R13 and E-13 come exclusively from France.

Pastor Rob, it's an E11 without the stamp. Yours was made at the time when E11 serial numbers were close to the same as the R13 serial numbers, so your clarinet would be from the early/mid 80's.

A lot of E11's were made without the stamp at that time. So many, in fact, that by the 90's, Buffet had to put out a warning telling buyers to beware of people selling German/W.German horns as R13's.

In spite of that, Buffet still makes many E11's without the stamp. A student bought one that was made about 4 years ago without a model stamp. Buffet confirmed it is an E11.

The whole no model stamp on R13's was/is such a bad idea. It's been nothing but confusion ever since they started making other models with the Buffet logo, especially since they often fail to stamp some of the other models.

Fortunately I didn't pay much for it. It is still a decent horn.
