B & H 1010 mouthpieces come in (I think) 3 types, number 1,2 and 3. Can anybody advise me as to what these numbers signify in terms of the characteristics of the mouthpieces?

1 being least open tip, 3 being the most open tip (perhaps longer lay) and 2 in the middle.
Personally if I were playing 1010 again, I'd look into Pillinger or Eaton mouthpieces.

Of the many B&H 1010 and 926 mouthpieces I have seen over the years I would guess that 95+ % were No. 2 lay.
I think that they shipped this as standard with their new instruments.
No. 2 is a med lay by UK standards but would probably be considered quite open in the USA.
As usual with B&H they were not very consistent in their openings and playing characteristics.
When they were good (not too often) they were very very good!! etc.

I echo Paul's suggestion. I have a set of 1010's and I had Peter Eaton make me one of his. I know they cost a bit more than some others, but they are really great.

FWIW I play 1010s with a Michael Lomax mouthpiece with which I am very happy - I did try some Pillingers too but preferred the Lomax but this could just be personal choice or the selection that I was offered on the day.

Mike actually made a mouthpiece for the 1010 bore. I had two of them on trial when I met him while he was here in London a few years back. Sadly I don't think they took off and as far as I know he doesn't specifically make them anymore.

I have two 1010 B&H mpcs, a "3" and a "2" made from a mold of a "pre-war" B&H 1010 #2 by Daniel Bangham.
