 NYSSMA Clarinet Level 5
Author: Em10

I am doing a level 5 on Bb clarinet. the piece is called Sonata in C Minor by Georg Philipp Telemann. I was wondering if I am supposed to play all the parts if not what parts am I supposed to play? I know all 12 scales and know some sight reading, is there anything else I must know before attending NYSSMA this year?

Hi Emily, I am a NYSSMA judge. You must play all the movements.

Be prepared to play 3 of the 15 scales (not 12) as well as sight reading.

Good luck...

You should also be prepared to play natural and harmonic minor scales at least through 4 sharps and flats, plus the major and minor arpeggios.

Ken's suggestions are important fundamentals to know, however only the major scales will be asked at NYSSMA.

It's never too early to learn the minor scales and associated arpeggios.

So are there 15 major scales? Or does that include whole-tone and chromatic?

Just askin'...

So what are the 15 scales and will they ask for specific scales or can I choose which scales I play?

If it's the same way back when I played NYSSMA, the judges generally pick the 3 scales (although some of them let me pick one of them). As for the scales, there are more than 12 because enharmonics are considered different scales (C# and Db, F# and Gb, and B and Cb are considered separate major scales; each major key has a scale). A judge was surprised that I actually picked C# (but I knew I could play it).

Choices: C, C#, Db, D, Eb, E, F, F#, Gb, G, Ab, A, Bb, B, Cb
