I've owned and played improvised music using a Selmer Recital. I've always enjoyed the warm, rich tone, but felt enslaved, intonation-wise, to the Selmer C85 120 mouthpiece, since every other mp in my collection plays very flat on the horn, and I use the short barrel. I've never been a fan of the C85; the tone was okay, but it didn't click with me, and the lowest notes were stuffy. And so, today I decided to take a chance and refaced - I learned to do that years ago, experimenting with a few mp's I disliked and would never want to play - the C85. I extended the facing and opened it up. Using a Vandoren #3 as my reference reed, it's now easier to play, and the low E, and corresponding B are much more clear. My tuner reports that all notes are acceptable. If you too, a player of this fine horn, are frustrated by mp limitations, check into a refacing, but no, I do that only for myself.
