 Breath Builder Use

Hello!

I'm new poster here, but I was reading this forums since 2010 and applied much info :)

So, to develop my breathing more I bought a breath builder and want to ask your advise how to better use it. With small or large tube? Standing or sitting? When closing holes on exhale, should I open it when inhaling? How to better feel that I'm breathing low with builder?
I think I'm inhaling too high, because my chest and throat tends to tense up a little bit when I play the clarinet...

My teacher loaned me one a few weeks ago (maybe months by now). It only came with one tube, so I didn't have an option there. I'd start with whichever one is easier (less resistance, so I'd guess the larger one). I would close the same holes during inhalation and exhalation. You want to breathe deeply with it; the goal is for you to be able to breathe with your diaphragm and not just your chest.

When I started using it, I had all the holes open, then one closed, then two closed (it has three and at least one has to stay open for air movement). Once I got used to it, I actually found it easier to work with more holes closed off (more resistance was easier for me to deal with). At first, I could only take 3 inhalations/exhalations in a row before I would get dizzy. I would also use it intermittently while sitting and watching TV. I never used it standing. I have low blood pressure, so I have to be careful with that. I've been able to increase practice time standing somewhat, but it's still not a ton of time (too bad, because I sound better playing while standing). I would start out sitting, then try standing when you can add it.

Please add anything or correct anything I may've gotten wrong.

I use the big tube, inhale with all holes open, exhale with the big hole covered and one of the small holes covered, exhaling as long as I can. I do this sitting, standing, before practice/rehearsal, and after practice/rehearsal.

Hope this helps.

You, as a clarinet player, are supposed to use the small tube, as are all woodwind (except flute) and high end brass. The large tube is for the flute and the low end brass.
It's self explanatory but it depends on what you need to train for... instruments needing smaller air flow but against higher resistance or instruments needing more air but against little resistance. (Just read all this in the sales splurge).

I play better when standing too. Perhaps it's because breaths come more freely. R

My teacher recommends taping the big hole and one small hole on the top so that only one small hole is open. Then use the small tube for Bb clarinet. She recommends for bass clarinet, and even Eb clarinet to use the bigger tube. She teaches playing the Eb with a very open embouchure. For some reason, it really works.

Thanks for replies! I asked yesterday Hakan Rosengren about it and he recommends the same, to leave only one small hole.
