My Selmer Signet Special clarinet is wood and when I keep my clarinet at school the wood on it turn a light brown. Why is this?? My band teacher told me to oil it so I did and a week later it turned light brown agin... I oil every month. The natural colour of Grenadilla/ African Blackwood is closer to a dark brown. The manufacturers stain the wood black to cover blemishes in the wood and use a black wax and wood powder filler to fill any knot holes. If your instrument is oiled regularly then it probably is not drying out. If you can live with the appearance and the instrument plays well dont worry. If you are not happy contact the manufacturer or dealer for some help.

Clarinets don't have to be black. In fact there are clarinets made from woods of other colors, such as rosewood, which is reddish. Metal clarinets are silver and plastic clarinets come in blue, white, red and green, at least. If I were you, I would be more concerned about how the clarinet sounds than what color it is. Enjoy the unique look of your instrument.

I dont mind the fact that its turning colors, but I just wanted to find out in case there something wrong with it doing that, like maybe its drying out... It has never done that till this year and I have had it for 3 years...

I don't know how you oil you instument, but maybe it helps if you put your instrument for a period in an oil bath. My teatcher does it once a year. And then her clarinet is glimming and black again.
I have my clarinet now too for three years but it doesn't become light brown. But maybe you use your instrument more.
Don't forget to take the flaps off the clarinet before you put your instrument in the oil bath.
I hope you can do something with this information. If you think you can't do it yourself bring you instrument than to an clarinet maker, I think he knows how he can give your instrument an oil bath.
