I bought an old clarinet from e-bay, mostly because I was curious about the case. My idea is that it was used in a military band. The date stamped in the case is July, 1893. The case is tooled leather with a wool-like liner. Unfortunately, the case and clarinet were infested with weevils or whatever the pad-eating bugs are called. There are no live adults, but the case has lots of eggs. I have put it in the freezer, but the tech said that he would never use the case again for fear the eggs would hatch. Any ideas? Have any of you "debugged" a case for good?

Essentially these critters don't like sunshine. Most of the time placing the infested object outdoors will cause any live larvae to seek darker confines. I also found this advice on the internet:
Alternative methods of controlling
dermestid beetles are either to freeze
an infested object by placing it in a
freezer (enclosed in a plastic bag) for 2
weeks at temperatures below 18°F or
heating it in an oven for at least 30
minutes to temperatures above 120°F.
(Before using either of these methods,
consider if the object will be damaged
by cold or heat.)

I think I will try the freezer and hope. The case is really more interesting than the clarinet, at the moment. When the clarinet gets playable, then we'll see. The tech was very interested in the mouthpiece. It is wood and has been modified to sound more like a sax, he says. He pulled out his clarinet and tried the mouthpiece as soon as he saw it.
I'll try attaching a photo again.
