 R13 A clarinet bore measurements

Does anyone know the typical measurement range for the upper joint entry bore of R13 A clarinets?

I have a prestige A I'm trying that measures .593 (new clarinet)

Seems quite large (15mm) for a Buffet. IIRC R13's are typically ~14.8mm at the top and ~14.6mm at the bottom of the upper joint. Does the clarinet play well and have good intonation? If so then I wouldn't be too concerned about whether the bore is to spec or not.

I thought it seemed a bit large as well. Overall intonation is decent, although the upper left hand becomes increasingly sharp as it moves up to high C....

VERY Frustrating that Buffet would ream out a beautiful sounding piece of wood too lage... especially on a prestige model...

The top end of my Buffet R13 A clarinet from about 1998 measures right now as 0.589, at about 65 to 70 degrees F, not warmed up. It has great sound and intonation and I may play it in a quintet in about two hours. This was measured with a telescoping hole gauge and a micrometer. The four thousands of an inch difference is about the thickness of a piece of printer paper. A new clarinet will probably shrink a little as it ages. Good luck!

To clarify the above opinion, I suspect that the new clarinet body will actually expand a little with moisture from playing, making the bore a little smaller.

I saw this with a new-old stock 1971 R13 which I bought like new in 1993. The pitch was a little high at first, but playing it caused the bore to decrease slightly, lowering the pitch to a normal 440.

How long did it take before you started seeing the pitch drop?

Be sure to measure it in several diameters.
The entry into the upper joint will be wider than the exit of the barrel, but your measurement seems wider than I would expect.

FWIW at the entrance of the upper joint of my vintalge (new model c. 2005) R13 A-clarinet measures 0.5885 and 0.5890 at 70 deg. F, 40% Humidity (also digital gauge calibrated against a nearly zero environment). [West German comparitor digital spring caliper using a brass/steel ring standard at 0.5000+/-0.00005]

I had an R13 A with the upper end of the upper joint reamed too large, and it was impossible to play in tune in the high clarion, getting sharper and sharper as the Thumb C was approached.

I learned that its bore was .004 in larger than standard, and a number of R13 A's were shipped with the oversized upper bore. No way to replace the lost sawdust --although, conceptually boring the upper joint oversized, shimming it down with an inert and re-reaming was possible --if costly, etc.

I was able to make the instrument playable (but not enjoyable) by using a severely reverse tapered barrel and a Vandoren -13 series mouthpiece.

Good luck

Hmm.......sounds like the Bb reamers got into the A reamer slots.
(think about that for awhile)
