Theoretically, no . . . you don't have to go to college to play professionally. The question then becomes, "What are my chances of getting good enough on clarinet to play professionally without studying music theory and clarinet at the college level?" For most people, the answer to that question will be "Not very good chances." There will be exceptions, however. As Dirty Harry once said . . . "You just have to ask yourself - Do I feel lucky today?" But my advice is to not risk your future on "being lucky".

If you want to be a professional musician consider doubling on other instruments.
Seriously, there are maybe two seats in an orchestra for clarinetists and violin players falling all over each other on the other side of the stage.
Good players that come through the college ranks tend to have good practice habits and maintain their edge.
Be advised that many of them still hold more than one job to pay the bills.
If you have other interests in school, it may be helpful to develop them in parallel.
This board may be exceptional, but there seem to be more than a few computer and computer language professionals playing the horn.
Congrats on asking this sort of question now, you're way ahead of the game.

Be aware that even with college and graduate level study, few of those who make their living from music do it from performance alone. Most derive the major part of their livlihood from teaching, supplimenting that with part time orchestra jobs, or gigs from the union. This is true even here in South Jersey with the casinos in Atlantic City nearby. Also, technology is decreasing the number of jobs as more shows are using synthesizers and "canned" (recorded) music. The electronics that turn my truck cab into a concert hall also turn concert halls into unemployment lines for musicians. Sad but true.
Fred, an aside, glad to know I'm not the only Dirty Harry fan!

Beware the lifestyle is not easy. Practice like hell, double on sax clarinet and flute and consider a double reed oboe or bassoon for theatre playing. Work hard and be nice to your mother you are going to need her at some stage.
