i had bought a used R13 however the serial number does not come up as an R13 on buffet's website. can anyone help me tell what this instrument it. please help thank you.

Is the barrel new or original? I just searched Buffet 1131 and most of the results said R13 - as it doesn't have a model number stamped on the top joint, then assume it is an R13 as they're not stamped with the model number.

the serial number is 99651. does anyone know if its possible for buffet's website to be wrong about the serial number it does not look like this instrument was made in 1994. also are there any physical differences on the instrument that could help tell the difference between an R13 or an E13

are you sure you didn't miss a digit? 199651 perhaps?
check the number on both joints.
mine is 148xxx and that dates from 1974.

yea there is no 1, on both joints the digits are 99651. could there be any chance that the 1 is missing like an accident when making the instrument or something because if there was a 1 there it would be an R13 from 1979

so lets say buffet is right and the instrument is an E13, would an E13 with an R13 barrel look the exact same as an R13?

Is there any model designation on the upper joint? An R13 won't have one. I'm pretty sure all of the other models do.

no there is not all that is on it is the serial number, on the barrel however is 1131 which is an R13 but im not sure if the barrel is the original part (i looks newer and isnt as faded)

Does it say "Continentale' anywhere? The Buffet website says it's a BC 1102.AG made in 1994. That's an E13 equivalent.

Barrel numbers don't count for any clarinet identification purposes (other than identifying the barrel). They are often replaced.

If it's 1968 it's in really good condtion. If it's an R-13 you may have a very good horn, however all horns are not alike. Sort of like finding good reeds.

I am sometimes surprised at the limited knowledge many teachers appear to have about equipment. For some unknown (to me) reason, there is a gap in the serial number list on the Buffet site with regards to Buffet professional clarinets made around 1967-68 -- possibly some records were lost. My R13 Eb clarinet from the same time period doesn't show up in the serial number list either. I think I can say with almost certainty that you have an R13 from 1968. I'll bet, if you look at the left hand C#/G# key on the upper joint, you will find it has a flat spring.
The barrel in your pictures is a 67mm barrel for an R13. But it is not your clarinet's original barrel. The standard barrel length for your clarinet was probably 66mm. Also, if memory serves, Buffet did not adopt the 1131 designation for R13s until quite a bit later than yours was made. FWIW, my "front line" Bb clarinet is a Buffet from 1965. I replaced its standard barrel (66mm) with a 67mm barrel years ago.
The outside of the case suggests the clarinet was well-used. (I had to replace the handle on mine, as well.) The inside looks to be in pretty good shape, though.
If your clarinet is not in top condition, it's likely paying a good tech to fix up. From the pictures, it looks to be in decent shape and 1968 was a good year for Buffet clarinets.
