 Cracked Clarinet
Author: Kim L.

My clarinet has a crack on the left post of the register key and is slowly creeping up and down the grain. The crack is not all the way through the bore. My problem, besides the crack is that I have two performances on March 7th; one recital and an ensemble concert. I am not really willing to go without my R-13, but I know the risk of letting a crack go unpinned. Instead of playing my cheap plastic clarinet and having to borrow someone else's R-13 for my recital, I'd like to keep my R-13 until my performances are over. What are your suggestions?

Thanks for your help in advance.

I wouldn't wait to get the crack repaired, particularly because it's getting worse each day. It's not worth the risk of ruining the instrument. The work of pinning the crack can be done over the course of a day or two.

If you can't get the instrument back in time for your concerts, there are two possible substitutes. First, try your mouthpiece and R-13 barrel on your plastic clarinet. You'll be surprised at how good it sounds. Second, borrow an R-13 from your teacher or a friend. With your mouthpiece and barrel, there should be little difference between the instruments.

Good luck.

The problem is, I'm under a 2 year crack warranty and if I get it filled or pinned by someone else(I want to!), then I break the warranty. How can I persuade my parents this is the best way to go, although I break the warranty? The crack IS minor at the moment.

Since your R-13 is under warranty, you should get in touch with Francois Kloc, who is Buffet's US rep. He's very good and very nice. He is based in Chicago and his e-mail address is Francois.Kloc@boosey.com

If at all possible, you should go to Francois himself. If he's too far away or has too big a backlog, he will probably be able to give you the name of a repair shop near you authorized to do warranty repairs on Buffet. Such a shop should also be able to loan you an R-13 to play while yours is being fixed.

Tell your parents that "a stitch in time saves nine." The crack is spreading, and the time to fix it is now. The fix will be free under the warranty.

Best regards.

If this r13 has a crack during the warranty period you would be crazy to break the warranty. Make sure Buffet/Boosey or one of their dealers looks into the problem I have heard of this happening before and they havent provided the best service under the warranty. I would be getting a new top joint!
