 Practice Routine
Author: Mario

I have a question regarding the length of time one should be practicing in a consecutive way. I would like to know what is more profitable : practicing an hour an hour and a half whithout stopping or practice twenty minutes or so many times during the day. Any advantages of doing so ? Thank you .

Mario,

I have had to practice in each of the manners that you have described due to necessity. I believe that the frequency of practice is more beneficial to me rather than longer durations.

I have my clarinet right next to my computer. This way i can practice as long or as short a period as I want. I may play for five minutes or I may play for 30. Works for me.

I believe that for a beginner to medium level player that short periods of practice work best. Perhaps around 20 -30 mins 2 to three times a day. This will bring you back refreshed and ready to work whereas long practice sessions can easily lead to wasting time as concentration is hard to maintain. I also believe that you will know when you are ready to practice for a long length of time straight, for example two and a half hours. The irony i have is that found as you improve your playing you will often spend longer practicing, and suddenly there will also be more to practice.

Best of luck,
Col

It's not the quantity of practice, but the quality. You can go backwards in an hour and a half if you are not concentrating! In answer to your question, though, my two cents worth would be to go for frequency not duration.
