The quotation from MNN:
>>In 1962, the IRS approved the deduction of clarinet lessons (and the clarinet itself) as a legitimate medical expense after the orthodontist of a young patient suffering from overbite recommended that she give woodwind instruments a go as a method of correcting her unsightly dental abnormality.
>>
There's something wrong with that quotation. How would playing clarinet correct an *overbite* (buck teeth)? Some dentists even believe that playing clarinet exacerbates an overbite. Either that's a typo and the young patient really had an underbite (lower teeth sticking out more than the uppers) or there's some bogus reporting in that article.

You should be exerting more pressure with your lips than you are with your jaw. A friend of mine got into playing the flute on the recommendation of a dentist concerning overbite as well (though clarinet seems more at cross purposes I'm sure).

When my son began playing clarinet at an early age his orthodontist asked him if he played an instrument because he needed braces for having an overbite. When he said clarinet the doc said no you don't. He had to give it up and never went back. The doc recommended a brass instrument so he sang in the school chorus instead.
By the way, if you earn money from playing the clarinet you can deduct all and any expense for keeping up your clarinet playing. Reeds, mouthpieces, ligatures, repair, the clarinet itself, anything. Even milage to and from your repairman. But you have to earn income and declare it from performing and or teaching. ESP eddiesclarinet.com

Well I would recommend hot sauce. If you have a burnt tongue that could be a medical write off! There is a hot sauce called,"Scorned Woman." That should do the trick.
