Hey guys,
Ever since my braces were taken off about 2 months ago, my tonguing never quite recovered. My hypothesis is that because of the extra weight of the braces, I didn't have to work as hard to create a satisfactory embouchure and that I just have to strengthen the muscles there. The problem is especially troublesome for passages where I have to articulate the same note rapidly. I can tongue single notes at 16th notes at around M.M. 115 and that's if I strain myself. I can't keep it up for more than a few seconds, though. I've definitely seen improvement, but I've been improving very slowly, which means either I'm practicing incorrectly or it's a muscular problem. My teacher told me to make sure I'm not moving my mouth as I play and to tongue slowly and gradually increase the tempo, among other things like to do all my scales and such staccato, etc. I just wanted to get some advice and to see if anyone else has had this problem.

I have a few suggestions on my website, check it out on the clarinet pages. It could be the placement of your tongue more than anything else but it could also be what you do with the back of your tongue. ESP eddiesclarinet.com

Upon some reflection MY hypothesis is that you were forced to move your lips around the bulky appliances and the end result was using (correctly!) more lip musculature FROM ABOVE as the sides and bottom. So now what you may want to do is RE-emphasise the use of your upper lip (maybe even dabble with double lip embouchure just for snicks) until you are used to presenting even pressure ALL around the mouthpiece.
