I play klezmer it is a jewish style jazz and real fun to play on clarinet but I was hoping someone would have some trick or knolige on playing this style of music. In some of the recordings the make chirping and laughing sounds in the clarinet and I was wondering how to play those ? Plus in one of the peices they hit a grand C, I can't find the fingering to do that. Also what is the best reed and mouth peice for playing this ?

For fingering charts to the C above the 5th ledger line above the staff, the fingering charts that come with the Rubank ADVANCED method books has it as well as the fingering chart that comes with the COMPLETE Klose method book. These two are easy to find at most stores that specialize in band instruments. There is a book by Tom Ridenour that can be ordered by most music stores or you can order it from Gary Van Cott, a regular contributor to this bulletin board. You can locate him through the retail item on the menu at the bottom of each bulletin board page.

I don't play Klezmer, but I certainly think its wonderful. There are (do a web search) several websites dedicated to it, some of which sell music (both sheet and recorded.)
I have the impression that Klezmer is played on eb clarinet. Hitting a Grand C would be very different on a smaller higher pitched instrument. The chirps are probably controlled squeaks or possibly opening a key on the side up to squeak it and the laugh sounds as if they relax the embouchure and then tighten it, but I have never tried it myself. Please write back if you find the answer elsewhere. You may find the website of one the many fine new Klezmer bands in the USA, and perhaps their clarinetist could tell you.

I love this stuff too and have a couple of books that can be a help.
A great site to find Klezmer music is at http://jewishmusic.com
Klezmer Collection by Stacy Phillips (Mel Bay publications) has a number of tunes for Bflat instruments and tips on playing some of the many ornamentals associated with it.
Have fun.

This music is GREAT! I went to KlezKamp in December and took a clarinet class from Merlin Shepard and learned to play some of the ornaments. Being trained as a classical clarinettist I was a bit scared to try these things that my teacher said never to do.
Most of the ornaments are done with the mouth and throat cavity. Experiment by overblowing notes, keeping the back of the mouth open and relaxed;making adjustments in your tongue level at the back of your mouth.
The best way to learn is to listen to the stuff, try to sing it, and then emulate the sound on your horn. Finding a klezmer cl teacher is a big help also. Good Luck!
PS There are books which explain the ornaments-Sapoznik, Rubin, Sokoloff- which can be found at jewishmusic.com, yiddishmusic.com, etc.
