 Contrabass travel case

I'm going to be touring internationally (!) on contrabass next year, and need a new case. I barely trust my current one to make it down the street, let alone survive as cargo on a transatlantic flight.

I need a new case, and I have a feeling it will have to be custom-made. I've already contacted Wiseman about possibilities. I'd like to explore my options, though (and they'd need my instrument on-hand to make it). There's, of course, always the option of homebrewing, but I'm not particularly up for that kind of project right now. Are there other manufacturers that you'd trust to make a durable custom case?

I'm playing a Leblanc low C paperclip. If there's a case I can fit in an overhead bin on a plane (I'd have to disassemble the horn at the half), that would be epic. Otherwise, the case would have to be really durable.

I would highly recommend Fred Jacobowitz in Raleigh, NC. He built a custom case for me to hold a Bb and Eb clarinet. I understand that he can either repair a case or build one from scratch if necessary. The work that he did for me was first-class and very reasonable. You can contact him at:

fbjacobo@case-closed.us (his email)

Also, do a search for his case-closed website. I hope this information is beneficial to you!

JL Smith has case repair tools and supplies. http://www.jlsmithco.com/CASE-REPAIR

Altieri http://www.altieribags.com/ makes custom soft cases that look very well padded. See the bass sarrusophone case at http://www.contrabass.com/pages/cbcl.html

Selmer makes a case for its BBb contra http://www.selmer.fr/accessoiresimage.php?type=ETUI&code=1110000011&defaut.

You might be able to place a custom order at http://musicians-friend-inc1.amazonwebstore.com/LeBlanc-Contrabass-Clarinet-Case-Standard/M/B001LNDVQ0.htm.

Wiseman makes them http://www.wisemancases.com/photo.html, but if you have to ask the price, you can't afford one.

Cases2Go says that Anvil constructs cases to order. http://www.cases2go.com/productview.asp_Q_id_E_34204 They also have links to many other makers.

Gemstar makes cases to order. http://www.gemstarmfg.com/

Good luck. I can't imagine a new hard case for under $500.

Sweet, I'll check those all out.

Got an estimate from Wiseman, it's a few bucks more than I paid for the instrument. But then, I got a crazy-awesome deal on the instrument.

Update: I ended up going with a completely different option. Bought a Pelican Storm iM2950 (the nice folks at Backun turned me on to this option). Still under $300 after tax and shipping, a fraction of the cost of a custom case. Military-grade, durable as hell, I can stand on it safely with instruments inside. Came with perforated foam, was roomy enough that i also put my Eb in. Will see in a couple days how well it flies.

I would've gone for the longer, thinner iM3300, but it wouldn't fit in my car. This case is a bit of a compromise, as I have to disassemble the contra to fit it in.

I can't imagine needing both Eb and Contrabass for the same gig, not even in pit orchestra. But I'm glad you got what you needed. Air travel is stressful enough without worrying about an instrument.

Those are actually the two horns I use the most, often at the same gig. I play both Eb and Contra (and only Eb and contra) in the klezmer/rock/jazz/etc. band Bubbeleh. I'll also be playing both when I guest with the drone/doom tuba duo Ore later this month. Since there was extra room, I figured why not... one less case to schlep. My suitcase is already crazy-full with guitar pedals and clothes, and the bass is my carry-on.

Hi Alex,

I'm glad that case worked out for you. We swear by our Pelican cases and have not had a single problem yet. After hundreds of thousands of miles under airplanes our cases still look great!
